Discover how Forward Focus Consulting and Coaching addresses the critical need for emotional intelligence, reliability, and task management skills in today’s workforce.

Growing up, the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) was virtually unheard of, especially in the formative education years from middle to high school. Reflecting on my own journey, I realize that understanding and managing my emotions wasn’t something I just ‘grew into’ as I transitioned into adulthood. It was a challenging process of trial and error, a path marked by personal and professional growth, marked by a relentless work ethic and a growth mindset that refused to let me repeat the same mistakes.

Learning Emotional Intelligence: A Personal Story

My first real mentorship came in an unlikely setting—my initial job at Goodwill as a community jobs participant and then as an AmeriCorps member. It was here that I encountered a supervisor who embodied the balance of understanding and accountability. Goodwill’s commitment to teaching soft skills was evident in every aspect of our work. I remember a particularly impactful lesson on timeliness; returning late from a break, I found myself locked out of class—a bold move that underscored the importance of accountability, not just for me but for the participants too. That day, a lesson was learned not just by me but by my peers as well: rules and expectations apply to everyone, indisputably.

The Workforce Challenge: Emotional Response and Reliability

In my current role, leading a team in the staffing industry, the primary reasons for dismissing a field staff from an assignment often revolve around their emotional responses, attitudes, reliability, and attendance. While we strive to prepare and support our field staff from start to finish, the underlying issues run deeper for many. We’re engaging with individuals from underserved backgrounds, many of whom have high ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) scores, and face deep-seated challenges that require more than just a job.

Breaking the Cycle: The Role of Forward Focus Consulting and Coaching

At Forward Focus Consulting and Coaching, we step in to address these profound needs. Our approach goes beyond mere job placement; it’s about upskilling in soft skills, fostering emotional intelligence, and teaching the fundamentals of task management and reliability. We aim to instill the understanding that personal accountability for one’s paycheck and financial responsibilities is paramount. Many of the individuals we support are caught in a vicious cycle of working to survive, with little to no support network to lean on, desperate for change but lacking the time or capacity to seek it.

As we delve into the transformative power of emotional intelligence, reliability, and task management, it’s clear that the solution for many of our staff and participants lies in comprehensive support and education.
